CASE STUDY

A statewide primary roster, in.300 cite-able candidate profiles, out.

An editor's five-issue framework — operationalized across 50 state senate districts and 100 state house districts in time for the primary.

What would take a research team months of manual work — delivered in days.

You publish a newsletter to readers who care about specific issues. A primary is coming. The candidate roster is hundreds of people across more than a hundred races. You'd love a research brief on each one — positions on the handful of issues your readers actually vote on, plus voting records for incumbents, plus sources every reader can verify. The research is essential. It's also too time-consuming for any one person, or any small team, to actually do. By the time you'd produce it, the primary's over. Handled rebuilt this entire pipeline as a done-for-you delivery: hand us your framework and the roster, get back a cite-able guide and a public site your readers can search.

What we built

View the live candidate guide→
Home page with statewide candidate counts, district navigation, and a ZIP-based ballot lookup form.
Statewide candidate count, district navigation, and a ZIP-based ballot lookup — readers see exactly what's on their own ballot.
Single candidate profile showing five-lens position scores with sources and a voting-record table.
Each candidate profile shows positions on every lens with color-coded scores, narrative explanation, and inline source citations — plus voting records for incumbents on lens-relevant bills.
ZIP-based personalized ballot view showing federal, state, and local races on a specific ballot.
Personalized ballot lookup — readers enter their ZIP and see every federal, state, and local race on their specific ballot. The project grew from 300 state-legislature profiles to more than 6,000 candidates statewide.

How it worked

The pipeline is the boring part — that’s the point. Here’s how the recordings became a permanent site.

  1. 1

    Roster verified

We confirmed the official candidate list against the state's election filings. The state senate is staggered — only 25 of the 50 districts had primary races — so we caught that, locked the roster, and aligned it to the editor's planned coverage.

  2. 2

Schema designed against the editor's framework

She came to us with five issue lenses her newsletter readers actually vote on. We didn't reinvent her framework; we operationalized it. Every profile would carry her five lenses, with position scores, narrative explanation, and verified sources — plus voting records for incumbents on lens-relevant bills.

  3. 3

Researched in batches, every claim sourced

We ran batched research across every candidate, pulling from state filings, campaign sites, news archives, voting-record databases, and endorsement scorecards. Over a thousand source citations across the full dataset, each one tied back to a verified URL.

  4. 4

    Validated and de-hallucinated

Our adversarial QA gate, run in a fresh session before delivery, caught a fabricated endorsement from a high-profile national figure that the research had asserted as fact. We corrected it with secondary news verification, demoted thirteen over-inferred positions to honest 'no public position found,' and stripped 166 dead-link sources. Without the QA gate, the hallucination ships.

  5. 5

Delivered as cite-able artifacts and a searchable site

A 720-page branded PDF, structured JSON and CSV exports for newsletter reuse, a 15,000-line markdown master document, and a deployed static site with district browsing, candidate search, and methodology disclosure — all on a flat monthly subscription, no scope document, no hourly billing.

Maybe you’ve got this problem too

The same pipeline works whenever you have hours of recorded knowledge that nobody can find later.

  • Voter-education organizations

League-of-Women-Voters-style civic groups producing neutral candidate guides for general audiences. Same research rigor, framework you supply, no editorial position from us.

  • Advocacy newsletters in other states or future cycles

Same editor framework, swap roster. The pipeline is state-agnostic — if you can supply a values rubric and a candidate list, we can produce the guide. After this delivery, the same project expanded to thousands of federal and local races, and the framework ported cleanly.

  • Membership organizations with values-aligned voters

Trade associations, faith communities, professional bodies: any constituency where the framework is the editorial product and the candidate research is the bottleneck. We turn the framework into hundreds of cite-able profiles before the cycle ends.

Research that is necessary but too time consuming for anyone to do.
